Celebrate the Women Who Inspire Me
In honor of International Women’s Day, Sylvan has challenged us to highlight pictures of women: “Simple, strong, loving the art and the ideal, brave and free too, the woman of tomorrow will want neither dominate nor be dominated” Louise Michel.
Many women inspire me but I am so proud of my sisters and nieces and the mark they have left or will leave on the world. They are caring, intelligent, creative, loving women. I cherish them. When we are together we laugh, argue (to the dismay of some), voice our opinions (to the dismay of others), and sing (to the dismay of many). We are individuals yet share a bond which can’t be broken. Celebrate them with me.

Cecilia is the executive director of a labor union. She will be a member of the AFL-CIO delegation to the UN Conference on the Empowerment of Women in 2016.

Rose is a high school French teacher in the District of Columbia School District. Janis, my older brother’s wife, is a legal coordinator in the health care industry.

Ellen is a senior at the University of California at San Diego and is very involved in the political process. Ellen loves trees. Lisa is a science teacher and a breast cancer survivor.

Ruth teaches elementary education. She also paints rocks, as strange as that may sound. Check out Ruth’s Rocks. She was a 2015 finalist for Alaska State Teacher of the Year.

Amelia is a recent college graduate in vocal performance. She started singing almost the moment she was born and has a beautiful voice.

Karla is a small business owner in Sioux Falls South Dakota. Stop by Lost Marbles Antiques if you are ever in town.

Olivia is a college student and wants to see the world. She is majoring in international studies.

Nora is a freshman in college. She is a free spirit who will leave her mark on the world.

Susan is a teacher specializing in K-12 education for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Alex became part of the family in 2014. Come July, she may welcome one of the next generation of strong women to the world. Marla, my younger brother’s wife, manages an educational scholarship program.
