Olomouc, in the Czech Republic, is known for its six Greek mythology themed baroque fountains. The Arion Fountain, at the southwest corner of the Olomouc Town Hall, was created in 2002 as part of the reconstruction of the Upper Square. It was designed by the famed sculptor and Olomouc native Ivan Theimer. The subject of the sculptural elements is the ancient legend of the Greek poet, singer and kithara player Arion, who rescued from the sea by a dolphin attracted by his singing. The oval pool of the fountain includes three bronze sculptural groups: an obelisk on the shell of a monumental turtle, sculptures of two children and a life-sized Arion holding on to a dolphin. The statues are covered by a detailed relief decoration celebrating Moravia, the city of Olomouc and its inhabitants.
