Hugh’s 51 Weeks:51 Songs Week 9

Yesterday When I was Young

My dad was a huge fan of bluegrass and country music (though he would hate most of what is considered country music today). He taught himself to play the guitar, banjo, and fiddle. Pretty much the only programs he watched on TV were shows such as Hee Haw and The Buck Owens Show. Roy Clark, the co-host of Hee Haw from 1969 to 1992, was a renowned banjo player and country and classical guitarist. His instrumental skills had an enormous effect on generations of bluegrass and country musicians. Clark also had a couple of pop hits. This hit from 1969, Yesterday When I Was Young, is one of my favorite songs.  It was written and originally released as Hier Encore  in 1964 in French by Charles Aznavour.
