Home Again

I arrived at Union Statio in Washington, DC early this afternoon. The lobby of the station is newly restored and beautiful. The same cannot be said for the passenger boarding areas. It was 95 degrees (35 C) and a shock to the system, but I am home again.

I live near Washington, DC, and the area is full of National Parks, Monuments, Historic Sites, and Museums. Most of them are free to visitors. It is a wonderful place to spend a holiday if you have kids. The sites are managed by the National Park Service, which is celebrating its 100th birthday.

Fresh pale pink carnations decorate a Christmas tree at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens, the house/museum of Marjorie Merriweather Post, Washington, DC.  Post was one of the wealthiest women in the United States in her day. She collected French and Russian art and left her Washington, DC, estate and art collection as a museum.

The current dome on the US Capitol in Washington, DC, is the second dome to grace the structure. Designed by Thomas U. Walter, the dome was influenced by classical European domes; it replaced a wooded dome completed by Charles Bulfinch in 1824. Built between 1854 and 1865, the new dome was made of fireproof cast iron painted to look like stone.   Constantino Brumidi painted a fresco, The Apotheosis of Washington, on a platform above the interior dome’s oculus.
