Wall painting of the god Osiris in the Temple of Amana. The Temple of Amana, the oldest Egyptian temple in Nubia, was saved from the rising waters of Lake Nasser during the construction of the Aswan High Dam.  The temple was saved by France, in an effort by over 50 countries to save the monuments and buildings of ancient Nubia.

Sri Lanka Statues

Hindu and local deities, polychrome wood, Dambulla Caves, Sri Lanka

Two polychrome wooden statues from the second and largest cave at Dambulla, in Sri Lanka. Most of the statues and painting in the cave complex relate to Buddha.  These figures have been identified as Saman, one of four guardian deities of Sri Lanka, and the Hindu god Vishnu. The statues date from the 12th century A.D.
