One afternoon in Luxor, I watched the sunset on the Nile from my stateroom balcony. The serenity of the Nile was amazing. When K’lee and Dale’s suggested the four elements (earth, air, water, fire) as the theme of this week’s challenge, it struck me that each element was captured in these scenes of feluccas catching the wind at the end of a day. The mountainous landscape in the background is the location of the Valley of Kings and the Valley of Queens. From earth to earth, they say.

Looking west across the Nile, Aswan, Egypt
Sunset on the Nile, looking toward the west bank, at Aswan. The lights illuminate the Tombs of the Nobles of Aswan(Qubbet El Hawa), sometimes called the Tombs of the Governors. These ancient rock-cut tombs of governors (nomarchs) and high officials date mainly to the Old and Middle Kingdom, though there are examples as late as the Roman period. The necropolis is still being excavated and significant new tomb and material have been found since 2013. Seven decorated tombs are open to the public. Unfortunately, we didn’t visit them on my tour.
