Interior, Dome, US Capitol, Washington, DC
The current dome on the US Capitol in Washington, DC, is the second dome to grace the structure. Designed by Thomas U. Walter, the dome was influenced by classical European domes; it replaced a wooded dome completed by Charles Bulfinch in 1824. Built between 1854 and 1865, the new dome was made of fireproof cast iron painted to look like stone. Constantino Brumidi painted a fresco, The Apotheosis of Washington, on a platform above the interior dome’s oculus.
Gothic Columns and Vaults, 1449-1500, Aarhus Cathedral, Aarhus, Denmark
Aarhus Cathedral, as it now exists, was built in the Gothic style between 1449 and 1500. Like the exterior, the columns are made of brick, rather than marble or another stone. Prior to the Reformation, at which time the walls were painted to cover the frescoes, the natural brick might have been exposed. The painting decorating the vaults which the columns support was restored in 1990.
High Altar, Trinidad Church (Iglesia de la Trinidad), Porto, Portugal
The high altar in Trinidad Church, Porto, Portugal, was decorated with vibrant flowers. Flowers were placed throughout the church on all the side altars and other spaces with surface areas. I don’t know it was a special occasion or religious holiday. It was at the end of May. If anyone knows the background on this use of flowers, please let me know. I was fascinated by the stepped structure behind the altar itself. I saw several altars with this type of stepped backdrop in Portugal but don’t know the symbolism.
