Christopher Columbus’ Coat of Arms

Wall covering, Alcazar Real of Seville, Coat of Arms, Christopher Columbus

After he returned from his second voyage to the Americas in 1496, Christopher Columbus was received by Isabella of Castille at the Alcazar Real in Seville. The meeting occurred in the Admiral’s Hall, part of the Casa de la Contratación (House of Trade), founded by the Spanish monarchs in 1503 to regulate the trade between Spain and the New World.  Embroidered wall-hangings with the coats-of-arms of the Admirals of Castile decorate the square room. Christopher Columbus’ coat-of-arms hangs in the center, facing an elaborate altarpiece depicting the Virgin of the Navigators (c.1535), one of the first paintings to depict the discovery of the Americas. Columbus, and other navigators such as Amerigo Vespucci, are shown. Columbus is the blonde in the group on the right.
